The construction of this castle began in 1761, during the height of the Seven Years' War, commissioned by Count Wilhelm of Schaumburg-Lippe. Count Wilhelm, applying the most modern military strategies of his time, planned to establish a strategically important defensive outpost in the center of the lake. The castle was built on an artificial island from the bottom of the lake, using approximately 1.6 million cubic meters of stone and sand.
Wilhelmstein Castle was equipped with a highly unusual defense system for its time. Its robust walls were distinguished by their high resistance to enemy attacks, and a small military garrison was stationed within. Its main purpose was to protect the surrounding areas and ensure strategic control over the region.
However, the main feature that truly made the castle unique was the submarine project realized here. In 1772, thanks to the support of Count Wilhelm, the world's first functional submarine, named "Steinhuder Hecht" (Steinhuder Pike) by inventor Jakob Leupold, was tested right here. This event marked a major breakthrough in the development of underwater technology, laying the foundation for future submarines.
Today, Wilhelmstein Castle attracts thousands of tourists as one of Germany's most captivating historical monuments.
