The "LGBT" Stigma in Azerbaijan: Political Manipulation and Pressure on Civil Society

Pressure on civil society The - Pressure on civil society in Azerbaijan regarding LGBT - In Azerbaijan, the term "LGBT" has recently become a tool of pressure in political struggles and public discussions. Often, this expression is used to discredit certain individuals, institutions, or ideas, presenting them as opposing society's fundamental values.

Observations show that the "LGBT" stigma is applied as a label against political opponents, especially civil society activists and organizations accused of spreading Western values. Thus, their activities are cast into doubt, and their legitimacy is weakened.

These types of stigmatization campaigns hinder the activities of organized civil society organizations that can gain local support. They are often portrayed as "contrary to national interests" or "agents of foreign powers," which limits their scope of activity and reduces their credibility in society.

The existing conservative values and traditional norms in Azerbaijani society create fertile ground for such political manipulations to be more easily accepted. The sensitivity of the "LGBT" topic makes it an effective tool for targeting certain groups by bringing it into the political agenda.

Consequently, this approach hinders the development of human rights, freedom of expression, and a pluralistic civil society in the country. Instead of real discussions and problem-solving, political stigmatization and polarization deepen further.
