What you think is a heart attack could be 'broken heart syndrome': Understanding the differences is very important

Many people who experience symptoms like chest pain and shortness of breath immediately suspect a heart attack. However, health professionals state that these symptoms can sometimes be related to "broken heart syndrome," medically known as Takotsubo cardiomyopathy. Although this condition exhibits similar symptoms to a heart attack, it differs in its mechanism of onset and treatment methods.

"Broken heart syndrome" is usually a temporary heart problem that arises as a result of intense emotional stress, such as the loss of a loved one, divorce, job loss, severe fear, or sudden shock. At this time, a part of the heart's left ventricle temporarily weakens and takes on an unusual shape, which makes it difficult for the heart to ensure blood circulation.

The symptoms of this syndrome are quite similar to those of a heart attack: chest pain, shortness of breath, general weakness, and sometimes loss of consciousness. It is precisely this similarity that makes diagnosis difficult and usually requires emergency medical attention. Doctors evaluate the patient's condition with examinations such as electrocardiogram (ECG), blood tests, and echocardiography.

The main difference is that during a heart attack, blockages occur in the coronary arteries, which stops the blood supply to the heart muscle. However, in "broken heart syndrome," no blockages are observed in the vessels. Instead, a sudden increase in stress hormones leads to temporary dysfunction of the heart muscle.

This syndrome is generally a temporary condition, and most patients fully recover within a few weeks or months. However, in severe cases, it can lead to serious complications such as heart failure. For this reason, anyone experiencing chest pain or other heart attack symptoms should immediately call for emergency medical help.

Accurate diagnosis by doctors and the initiation of appropriate treatment are vital. It should not be forgotten that stress and emotional tension can seriously affect our physical health. Therefore, maintaining psychological health is also of great importance for heart health.
