The 660-ton giant system protecting the Taipei 101 skyscraper from typhoons

Taipei 101, one of Taiwan's iconic structures and notable for its 508-meter height, is equipped with a special protection system considered an engineering marvel. Special technology is used to increase the building's resilience against natural disasters such as powerful typhoons and earthquakes.

Located between the 87th and 92nd floors of the skyscraper, a massive 660-ton steel sphere forms the core of a system known as a "tuned mass damper." This giant device balances the swaying movements of the building, preventing structural damage.

The system acts as a balancing element by swaying in the exact opposite direction of the building's movement caused by wind or tremors. Thanks to this, the skyscraper's resistance to centrifugal force is increased, and the building's stability is maintained even during high-intensity weather events.

Considered one of the world's most fascinating engineering solutions, this pendulum is not just a safety measure, but has also become a part of the building's architectural aesthetics. Visible to visitors, this system is cited as one of the clearest examples of how modern architecture can establish defense mechanisms against natural phenomena.
