Experts note that the transition to renewable energy must be carried out in parallel with fair social, economic, and political reforms. Otherwise, the environmental cleanliness of energy production will not eliminate existing inequalities and injustices in society, and in some cases, may even exacerbate them.
A sustainable future is not limited to carbon neutrality. This concept also encompasses the fair distribution of resources, social equality, poverty eradication, and the improvement of living standards for all people. Renewable energy projects should benefit local communities, protect their rights, and not harm the environment.
For example, some renewable energy projects may require large land areas, which can lead to the forced displacement of local populations or the disruption of their traditional way of life. To prevent such situations, detailed social and environmental impact assessments must be conducted during the planning and implementation of projects.
For this reason, in addition to investing in renewable energy technologies, governments and international organizations must develop broader policies. These policies should cover important areas such as reducing energy consumption, efficient resource management, decarbonization of the economy, and ensuring social justice.
Only through such a comprehensive approach can we build a future that is both environmentally sustainable and socially just. While renewable energy is an important stage on this path, it is not the ultimate goal.
