Why is Beijing Silent on the Indonesia-US Trade Deal?

Why is China Not Responding to the Indonesia-US Trade Agreement?

Why is Beijing Silent on - Why Beijing on the Indonesia-US Trade Deal - The recently concluded trade agreement between Indonesia and the US was accompanied by a statement from Beijing's Ministry of Foreign Affairs that it “should not harm any third party.” This statement had raised concerns among some analysts that China would take economic countermeasures. They expected a strong reaction from China against this move.

However, a closer look at geopolitical economics reveals that this framework does not accurately reflect either China's intentions or the true nature of the game. In reality, China is not planning any retaliatory measures against Indonesia's trade agreement with the US.

Analysts' previous forecasts were typically based on reactions observed when trade tensions rise between major powers. However, this case has different characteristics and is more closely linked to China's regional interests.

For Beijing, maintaining stability and fostering economic cooperation in the Southeast Asian region is a key priority. Escalating tensions in relations with a large economy like Indonesia is not desirable for China's “Belt and Road” initiative and its overall sphere of influence in the region.

Furthermore, China does not perceive Indonesia's trade ties with the US as a direct threat to its dominant position in the region. On the contrary, Indonesia's integration into the global economy can positively impact regional stability and trade flows, which aligns with China's own interests.

For this reason, China's official statement remains merely a diplomatic expression, and no serious economic pressure against Indonesia is expected in practice. Beijing is demonstrating a pragmatic approach to achieve broader strategic goals in the region.
