The vulnerability in question primarily stems from security gaps in the "pre-boot" phase. This means that attackers can gain access to the device before its operating system is fully loaded. Such deep access allows for complete control over all smartphone data, including personal files, messages, and application data.
The most concerning aspect is that this vulnerability poses a serious threat to cryptocurrency wallets. Security researchers have demonstrated the possibility of seizing crypto wallet "seed" phrases (recovery codes) by exploiting this loophole. This situation could result in users losing all their crypto assets.
This vulnerability was discovered by Ledger Donjon, the research division of blockchain security company Ledger. They highlighted the scale of this serious problem in MediaTek chips, revealing how widespread the threat is. Given that up to a quarter of Android smartphones are equipped with MediaTek chips, the potential impact is indeed very significant.
Experts advise users to regularly update their device software and avoid downloading applications from unknown sources. Furthermore, it is crucial for cryptocurrency users to employ additional protection measures, such as physical security keys.
