Major Dispute in the Perfume Industry: Estée Lauder Sues Jo Malone for Using Her Name
Scandal in the Perfume Industry - Perfume Industry Scandal Estée Lauder - Estée Lauder, one of the leading companies in the perfume industry, has sued renowned perfumer Jo Malone for using her name in a new perfume collection. This legal dispute has resonated widely in the perfume world, raising serious questions about brand rights.

Reportedly, the dispute's foundation was laid in 1999. That year, Jo Malone sold her self-founded company, "Jo Malone London," to Estée Lauder. According to the terms of the concluded agreement, the rights to use Jo Malone's name in the perfume and cosmetics sector were transferred to Estée Lauder.
However, Jo Malone recently collaborated with Spanish fashion giant Zara and launched a new perfume line called "Zara Olfactive Series by Jo Malone CBE." Estée Lauder states that it considers this collaboration a breach of the contract terms.
Estée Lauder's lawyers claim that Jo Malone's use of her name in a joint project with Zara undermines the value and exclusivity of the "Jo Malone" brand. They emphasized that they have appealed to the court to protect the brand's name and reputation.
Jo Malone, for her part, defends that she has not violated the terms of the contract and has the right to use her surname. After leaving "Jo Malone London," she established a new brand called "Jo Loves" and states that the collaboration with Zara was carried out precisely within the framework of this new brand.
This court case once again brings into focus the fine line between personal name branding and contractual obligations. As a result, a precedent could be set that might affect the future fate of brand names worth billions of dollars in the perfume market.
