Innovation in iron deficiency diagnosis: ASH sets new limits

The American Society of Hematology (ASH) has released new guidelines regarding the diagnosis of iron deficiency. According to the updated protocols, the lower limit of ferritin levels in adults has been raised to 30 µg/l. The main goal of this change is to detect iron deficiency in the body at an earlier stage and with high precision.

Experts state that previous limits were often not effective enough in identifying latent iron deficiency. The new standards provide doctors with more flexible diagnostic tools to prevent anemia. Thus, a ferritin value below this threshold will now be accepted as a direct basis to initiate treatment.

Iron deficiency can manifest in the body with various symptoms. Doctors particularly recommend paying attention to signs such as dark circles under the eyes, pale skin, and aphthous ulcers in the oral cavity. When such complaints arise, checking the ferritin level in a blood test is essential.

The new ASH guidelines will drive the updating of standards in medical practice. The application of these new limits in laboratory tests will serve as a basis for a more detailed assessment of patients' health status. Doctors consider it crucial for individuals, especially those in the risk group, to undergo regular examinations.
