Proposal for Live Broadcast of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Case on TRT Rejected by AKP and MHP

AKP and MHP Reject Proposal - AKP and MHP on the IMM case - A proposal brought to the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) for discussion aimed to broadcast the court proceedings related to the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) live via the Turkish Radio and Television Corporation (TRT). However, this proposal was rejected by the votes of deputies from the Justice and Development Party (AKP) and the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP).

It should be noted that this proposal was put forward by opposition parties at a time when public interest in the IMM case had significantly increased. Nevertheless, members of parliament from the AKP and MHP, who form the ruling coalition, objected to the proposal, preventing its adoption.

It was particularly emphasized that court proceedings should not be politicized. Akın Gürlek spoke on this issue, stating, "The court is not a political arena." This statement once again highlights the importance of legal processes remaining free from political influence.

It is noteworthy that Dervişoğlu, the leader of the opposition İYİ Party, also declared that he did not consider the live broadcast of the court session appropriate. He used the phrase, "I do not consider the live broadcast of the court appropriate," demonstrating that he reached the same conclusion, albeit for different reasons.

This decision limits the public's ability to obtain information about the progress of the IMM case. The rejection of the live broadcast has led to widespread discussions about the transparency of court proceedings, creating disagreements in various political circles.

This decision, adopted at the plenary session of the TBMM, has caused a significant stir in Turkey's political and legal spheres. Many individuals evaluate this step from the perspective of judicial independence and citizens' right to information.
